About Tonga

Tonga's islands are conveniently divided into several regions: Tongatapu (home of the capital city of Nuku'alofa), 'Eua (a place of unspoilt nature), Vava'u (famous for yachting), Ha'apai (the least inhabited area), and Niuas (islands in the north of Tonga). The total area of the Kingdom of Tonga is 748 square kilometres, and its population is 107,797 people. The majority of the population are Tongan, and the official languages are Tongan and English.

Like with many other countries in Oceania that do not rely heavily on tourism, Tonga's economy is driven by agriculture ' farming and fishing. However, the government has made efforts to increase profits from the service sector ' so if you want to catch Tonga in its almost pristine state, do not delay planning your trip.

The islands offer the perfect setting for outdoorsmen with great spots for snorkelling, diving, and kayaking. The quickest way to move between the islands is by air ' Real Tonga Airline operates most of the local trips, including the eight-minute flight between Tongatapu and 'Eua, said to be the shortest scheduled flight in the world.

Visa requirements for entering Tonga vary for different countries. Residents of the Schengen Zone can enter the country visa-free for up to 90 days while Chinese nationals are allowed a 30-day stay. Citizens of most other countries can get a visa on arrival, while some will have to apply for an entry permit in advance.
