Study in New Zealand
In order to study or take an internship in New Zealand, a student visa is required, unless you are enrolled in a single course for less than 3 months. In this case, and if your country has signed agreements with New Zealand on visa exemption, a valid passport is sufficient. Note that visa exemption do not apply to primary and secondary school students.
If you are interested in studying in New Zealand, ask your current school or university to find out more about foreign exchanges available, or contact the embassy of New Zealand in your country to learn more about bilateral agreements, exchange programmes, government-sponsored programmes or scholarships available to foreign students.
For any course exceeding 3 months, you will need to apply for a student visa. In order to apply, you need first to enroll in a school or university. Upon payment of tuition fees, you will receive a confirmation of registration receipt from your host institution for the chosen course(s).
Once you have received the receipt, download the student visa application form available on the website of the embassy of New Zealand in your country, complete it and send it back to the embassy with a copy of your confirmation of registration receipt and the “financial undertaking for student“ form (INZ 1014) fully completed. Upon payment of the visa fees, your visa will be issued for the length of your course. You can get your visa within 5 or 10 days.
Foreign students may work in New Zealand up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and full time during the Christmas holidays provided they are enrolled in a full-time course.
Good to know:
You will not be covered by the public health system in New Zealand during your stay. You will need to take out a private health insurance.
