Labor market in Australia

The labor market in Australia is quite open and several economic sectors are frequently seeking for skilled workers (IT, new technologies, medical care, radiology, hairdressing, haute cuisine etc.)

There is a minimum wage in Australia, which is determined by the category of job you fall into (executive, engineer, employee etc.). Note that the federal minimum wage is of $14.31 per hour and $543 per week (before tax) since October 2008.

The legal working week time is set at 38 hours and 4 weeks of paid holidays are granted per year. However, each Australian state has its own legislation.

Good to know:

A good level of spoken and written English is somehow essential to find a job in Australia. For instance, the unemployment rate among immigrants having insufficient knowledge of English is higher than average. Note that you will probably have to lower your expectations when entering the Australian labor market. This is the best way to get started and acquire enough experience to later find a job in line with your aspirations.
