Foreign citizens must hold their national driver’s license in addition to an international driver’s license in order to drive in Australia.
For more information about the international driver’s licence, or to apply online for an international driver’s license, please visit the IDLSERVICE website at www.idlservice.com.
People drive on the left-hand side of the road in Australia. You may need some time to get accustomed to it if you’re coming from a country where people drive on the right-hand side of the road.
It may not be useful to have your own car shipped to Australia. According to the special rules that apply for cars in the country (safety measures, color of car headlights, left-hand driving etc.), it is somehow easier and simpler to find a car of your own directly in Australia.
Note that you’ll have to have your car plates registered. A yearly fee applies, including compulsory third party insurance.
For more information about labels or compulsory insurances for your vehicle in Australia, please visit the following websites: www.greenslips.com.au/about-greenslips/third-party-insurance.html or www.maa.nsw.gov.au/default.aspx?MenuID=88
