Upon arrival in Quebec, if you carry a permanent resident card, you will have to visit the RAMQ (Quebec Health Insurance Board) to apply for a health insurance card, the "Carte Soleil", which gives you access to healthcare services covered by the health insurance plan. It has a credit card format and you must carry it with you at all times. This card ensures you free access to national health services and allows the issue of prescriptions as listed under the prescription drug insurance plan.
How to get it?
You will have to visit an office of the Régie or call them to obtain a registration form. You will be ask to provide some certificates such as your permanent resident card or any other documents you received from the Canadian immigration authorities, your Quebec Selection Certificate (CSQ), a picture, and, if you are from Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal or Sweden, a certificate of affiliation with the social security plan from your country of origin; you will thus avoid the three month waiting period before your coverage begins in Quebec.
Once you provide these documents, you will receive a letter with all the information regarding your coverage under RAMQ plan. You will then receive your sun-card. You will lose coverage if you spend more than 183 days a year outside Canada.
Some treatments are not covered like dental or orthopedic care and you will probably have to take out additional healthcare plan or private plan. Some employers provide their employees with additional healthcare benefits including dental care but it is not always the case. If this is the case, check out all the conditions to fulfill in order to be covered by your company healthcare plan!
You will have to take out a private insurance plan if you are a tourist, a temporary resident or under WHP in Quebec. If this is the case, get your personal quote online here!
