As anywhere else in the world, it is indeed possible to find a house or a flat to rent in the United Kingdom! However, it may take you some time before finding a place of your own due to supply and demand in major cities and in many areas. London for instance is one of the most expensive cities in the world and rents are incredibly high there. However, rents are getting cheaper in the periphery of big cities or off-centered from main economic poles. It's up to you to decide where you want to settle!
As far as your apartment hunt is concerned, note that it's easier to search for a flat directly in the UK. Landlords usually want to know who you are before renting their properties. You can start searching for a flat in the classified ads of major newspapers, on the Internet or via real estate agencies. Room sharing is also very widespread and many websites provide ads for room seekers.
Leases are generally one year in length and water, gas and electricity can be included in the rent. Everything will be clearly stated in your rental agreement. A deposit of one month rent will be requested to cope for the possible damages you may cause in your accommodation or in case of non-payment. If you have to break your lease, make sure you are allowed to sublet your house or apartment before leaving. A clause could be included in your rental agreement on this very point. If you can't sublet your house or apartment, you are legally bound to pay your rent till the end of your lease, including maintenance fees.
An inventory and statement of state of repair will be made in your presence before you move in. It's up to you to verify the general state of your housing and to notify the landlord or the real estate agency of the possible damages left unlisted. Check all the appliances and make sure they are usable.
