Travelling to the United Kingdom (England - Wales - Scotland - Northern Ireland)

Citizens from the EEA and the EU can freely travel to the UK with a valid national ID or a valid passeport.

Citizens from some Commonwealth countries can also travel to the UK without a visa. All they need to do is applying for an entry permit to the UK. For more information about entry permits to the UK designed for commonwealth citizens, please visit the Home Office website at http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk/. The length of the stay should not exceed 6 months. For a stay longer than 6 months, a visa is necessary.

If you neither are a citizen of the EEA nor of the EU, and if your not from an eligible Commonwealth country, you need to apply for a tourist visa at the British embassy or consulate in your home country.

 Good to know:

The United Kingdom is not part of the Schengen area. For instance, if you are travelling to Europe with a Schengen visa, you won't be allowed to travel to the UK unless you hold a valid visa delivered by a British consulate or embassy abroad.
