Internet Provider Information in Belize

In Belize, a company named BTL (Belize Telemedia Limited) is the main internet provider. They offer both residential and commercial services for internet access, home phone and e-mail. They also are the provider of Digicell, one of two of the cell phone providers in the country (Smart is the other one).

With high-speed internet connectivity of up to 4MB currently (and plans to increase), most people can find something suitable for their needs. I use the 2MB plan and it's actually quite fast in my opinion.

For non-citizens, you must pay a refundable $1000 BZD deposit on the internet modem (they have wireless and non-wireless modems). Citizens only pay $250 BZD.

The plans vary in cost depending on the speed you want, anywhere from $90 BZD to $850 BZD a month. They have specials a lot though, so best to get service when one is available. For instance, I pay $90 BZD a month for the 2MB, where normally it can run as much as $500 BZD a month.

Installation costs vary from area to area, but expect to pay roughly $200 BZD to have the service started. BTL may or may not have to visit your home to get things set up.

In regards to their service, I've moved once and they refunded my deposit. It took about six weeks.

The only complaint I have about BTL is their slow customer service. When you come to their office to get your service set up or for a problem, except to wait a half hour or more to be seen since they usually only have one person working (this has been true in both San Pedro and San Ignacio). Then to get all the paperwork done, etc., plan on another half hour.

Other than that I've been quite happy with their service.

One final note - I know in San Pedro Coral Cable offers internet, but I heard from others it was very, very slow! I believe it may be dial up service, which would explain why.
