Health care in India
General rules:
Some health rules
If you travel to India, no vaccine is mandatory. However, it is better to protect against hepatitis A and B, diphtheria, tetanus, meningitis, influenza and polio. Note that you can get vaccinated once in India.
Water:
Make sure you drink filtered water or mineral water in bottle, and use mineral or filtered water for your personal hygiene, but also to wash fruits and vegetables before you eat them.
The health care system:
India has no social security system as such and provides free health care for the poor in designated hospitals; the more well-off can opt for a private health care system, which is indeed not free but often of better quality. Also note that there are significant discrepancies with regard to health care according to the location in India. Specialists and equipments are not always available in the remotest areas of the country.
Obviously, according to the costs of living in India, you can easily be correctly treated in private hospitals without incurring excessive costs. Fees for consulting doctors and specialists are quite reasonable.
For information and get a list of practitioners speaking your language, or usually consulted by your fellow nationals in India, call the your national consulate or embassy.
Be sure to note references of your medications before you leave, and the name of their generic equivalents. This will allow you to easily get your medications once in India.
Finally, be sure to purchase health insurance before you leave. Get a free quote today for your expat health insurance in India!
