Driving in China

If you are not resident in China, you will not be allowed to drive in the country. According to your situation, you will have to apply for a residence permit before proceeding to a driver’s license exchange if applicable. Check if your country has signed a convention with China on driver’s license exchange beforehand.

A provisional driver’s license can nonetheless be delivered by the traffic management office in your area after taking theoretical tests and medical tests including vision and blood pressure. To that end, you must provide a certified translation in Mandarin of your national driver's license national, a photocopy your residence permit as well as a photocopy of your passport and passport-sized photos. Fees apply.

 Good to know: 

Chinese roads are deemed the most dangerous in the world. Traffic can be chaotic and the greatest caution is advised. If your stay in China is temporary, avoid driving and rent a car with driver! Prices are affordable and this you could avoid a great deal of stress!
