Opening a bank account in Mauritius

It's fast and easy to open a bank account in Mauritius. Formalities are very simple and no subsequent efforts are needed. In general, Mauritian banks require evidence of identity (Passport - Identity Card), recent bank statements, a copy of your work permit and a proof of residence in the island. You can even fill up your application form online with some banks.
Before choosing your bank, check your current bank to get information about partnerships that could exist between your bank and Mauritian banks.

Good to know:

Before depositing significant amounts of money in your Mauritian bank account, you must provide information about the origin of funds. (applicable above a certain amount varying from bank to bank).

Its is NOT quick and easy to open a bank account if you're an ex-pat here on a temporary basis and/or if you don't have an accomadation contract in your own name. I'd recommend any ex-pat reading this to bring with them to Mauritius proof of funds from back home (salary, bank statements), and if staying here for a fixed term, also bring proof of address from home - ORIGINAL utility bill in your name. It took me visits to 4 banks and 3 weeks wait as I had to have fed-ex'd an electricity bill from New Zealand until I could have a simple current account. I used to think a passport was sufficient for travel - seems the power bill is also an essential travel document.. ridiculous.
