On May 18th, MOPRI was launched through a collaboration between Verde Frontier Solutions Ltd, the Ministry of Commerce and Consumer Protection, and the Ministry of ICT. This partnership was established as part of the Mauritius Research and Innovation Council's Public Sector Transformation program. The application enables users to create a monthly basket of products for systematic comparison. It offers the ability to compare prices of over 450 commonly consumed products across more than 50 outlets throughout the island.
Furthermore, MOPRI includes a list of products whose prices are regulated by the government, such as bread, rice, flour, dual-purpose kerosene, gasoline, diesel, onions, and potatoes. Users can report any anomalies they encounter, such as the sale of regulated products at prices higher than legally stipulated.
Minister Balgobin presented the MOPRI project as the second initiative of the Public Sector Transformation Scheme during its launch. The first initiative involved the development of an application to foster collaborative projects and evaluate new approaches and technologies from startups and small and medium-sized enterprises. This initiative aimed to optimize procedures and enhance service delivery in the public sector.
The government has set several important objectives with the launch of MOPRI. Firstly, it aims to inform consumers and assist them in making informed choices during this period of inflation. The application also ensures that local stores comply with the price freeze on essential products. Additionally, MOPRI generates accurate analytical reports, which will be used for evidence-based policy-making.
