Welcome to Ecuador! I arrived on September 17th, 2008. Quito is the Capital, right on the Equator, at 9,350 ft. (1.77 miles) above sea level in the heart of the Andes Mountains, where the weather is 50's in the evening, and 70's during the day all year round. Valley of Eternal Sprintime!

Welcome to Ecuador! I arrived on September 17th, 2008 from my hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. I have knocked around Ecuador a good bit over the past 4 1/2 years, but I prefer Quito. the Capital, right on the Equator, at 9,350 ft. (1.77 miles) above sea level in the heart of the Andes Mountains, where the weather is 50's in the evening, and mid to hi 70's during the daytime all year round! • Greeting from E. Texas *S* .. I am planning a move to Quito. My question regards employment. In the states I am a Medical Assistant. Is there any possibility of continuing that career or will I need to find gainful employment in another avenue?

As for imigracion - do I need to declare that immediately? I ask as I am planning to sell all my possessions and house prior to the move and need to know about setting up banking and such.

Any advice you could give this mover would be appreciated.

    Cheers!

    TracyAnn

PS: I also have questions about doctor's, hospitals, and such. But that can wait for another day.

    • Hi Ron,
I like the climate and year round spring time temps of Quito, and they are quite similiar to Cuenca. ..from Quito I can get to the coast in about 6-7 hours just meandering along the hwy from Quito.
..but I need to be in close proximity to the UIO INT. Airport to pick up my guests and family when they come to visit.
..the EC. ministery of Imigracion requires you to show $800. per month income, they know you will make out ok on that, and not be a burden on society. ...but $1,200. to $1,600. you will be out to dinner often, wining & dining and have safe / secure house or condo. ..ripping & roaring on the EC. Tame airlines to all points of EC. to check out for yourself.
..on the first 1 yr. lease while in Quito you can get your visa hammered out while investigating first hand where you may want to park it permanently. good luck & stay in touch, J.A.

      • Since you have knocked around Quito a bit, what are the reasons you like Quito better than Cuenca or the coastal areas? I'm interested in retiring in Ecuador and wondered how hard it is to get used to the thin air in Quito?

My situation is that I will get a pension of maybe about $1800/mo in 2 years plus I have 2 houses in Phoenix that are paid off and I get about $2000/mo rental income. What kind of a lifestyle would that support in Quito until I receive social security?

        Thanks

        • Hi Fred,
The work is plentiful here throughout Ecuador, the economy grew by 8% in 2011. Minimum wage is $240. per month. Loads of condos going in on the coast, as well as Cotacachi - Quito - Cuenca. Most expats are self employed, or have on-line businesses, the Ecua Export Flower & Rose business is the biggest in S. America. Exporting seafood is big bus. here as well! Opportunities in Tourism and real estate sales are are doing well. I could see a self employed Electrician from the states catering to the rapid influx of other expats with fire / burglar / security cameras & electrical service doing well with reasonable patience during the start up period. How is your Spanish?
