I was born and lived in Saskatchewan, Canada for many years before moving to Alberta, Canada. We spent one winter in Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico and liked it so much that we retired and moved there permanently. Have been in Mexico since October of 2005.
Hi! We are from the U.S. and are interested in a place to retire. My husband is on SSD as of the end of August 2008. Having lost a lot of our retirement money due to the stock market, we need to retire on less.
Furthermore, we have no health insurance here, because the law now is that S.S. Disability requires the recipient to be on it for 2 years before receiving Medicare (it's been changed because they used to receive it as soon as they got SSD!). He needs medical care very much right now and we discovered, sadly, that he cannot get it in the U.S. because he has no insurance. After his lay-off prior to his receiving SSD, we could not afford $888 a month (just for 2 people!) to continue COBRA nor any of the other ridiculously high medical insurance policies. I know a considerable amount of Spanish and have found it much easier to get help with learning that than to get help with medical care for him in the U.S.. Please tell us about what is necessary for us to go there to get him the medical care he desperately needs. Muchas gracias!

Hi SJ. We don't have any medical insurance here, we pay for everything out of pocket as we are quite healthy.
Are you wondering what type of medical coverage you could get here if you moved here?
If you move here and get an FM3 (a permit which allows you to live here for a year, and then you renew it each year, cost of around $120.00 dollars a year each), you can then sign up for the government medical coverage called IMSS. This coverage goes into effect over 3 yrs.. Here are some links that you can read to find out more about it: http://www.imss.gob.mx/NR/rdonlyres/0DC7675E-95D5-40C5-A37F-4DD845BB9DBA/0/IMSS02014A.pdf

I hope that those links help you somewhat, if that is what you are wondering.
There are also private health plans; but as I haven't looked into any I really have no idea of cost or coverage.
