I am a noob to Abu Dhabi. Wtiting is my hobby and I would like to share my observations of an American starting a new life in the Middle East sprinkled with the spice of irony and humor.
Hi, I have been approached by a company in Abu Dhabi and I would like to ask you about living accommodations, travel, etc. when I am not offshore and on duty. You mentioned that you are from the SE so am I, from Tennessee. I would appreciate the opportunity to talk with you about your initial experience of moving, getting settled and how you find it so far. Thanks!

Hi Bob,
I was born and raised in NW Florida, the Redneck Riviera.
What kind of work are you considering in Abu Dhabi?
One thing to keep in mind is that housing is hellishly expensive here. A one bedroom apartment goes for 100,000 to 120,000 Dirhams/yr and they usually want that upfront in advance. Of course if you have a family, it will be much more for larger accomodations.
I am lucky as my employer provided me with a very nice apartment free of charge. You will need to negotiate this with your employer. If you spent half your salary on housing, it wouldn't make much sense to move here.
If you have kids, schools cost around 50,000 Dirhams/yr for each.
Travel is great with Bangkok 4 hrs away, most of Europe is 6-8 hrs away and Australia 12 hrs. There is lots to do locally as well.
Overall Abu Dhabi is a clean, safe, relatively stable place to be especially with all the financial turmoil back in the U.S.
Most of my other experiences are chronicled in my blog.
