Alex - hi :) dogs are fine here, if you are on facebook, do a search for the 'Dogs in Doha' group - excellent bunch of people who regularly get together to walk their dogs at the beach, do volunteer and rescue work for dogs and can also help give you information about relocation services for your dogs :)
Cooking is more of a challenge LOL, mainly because the supermarkets leave a lot to be desired when it comes to produce and meat. That said, Doha has a fantastic vegetable market and if you can get there in the mornings, you can get some lovely produce. Cookery books seem to be a bit thin on the ground lately although we do have a Virgin Megastore, it seems to stock mainly Arabic cookery books at the moment for some reason.
A couple of other sites to try are www.iloveqatar.net (I'm the food/restaurant reviewer for the new section to be launched soon) it's got LOTs of pages with info like cost of living, sorting out driving licenses etc. Another one is www.expatwoman.com - the qatar section has a forum, where you should be able to connect with a group of ladies here, who were (or still are) nurses before expat life and who meet regularly.
Hope that helps :)
If you have twitter, I'm '@expatcookie' you'll also find that Doha has a massive Twitter community and its a really valuable resource for whats going on here.
Amanda :)
We also Luuuuurve cooking and I am just gazing at the hundreds of cookery books we have!!! Can they be bought in Qatar? Also can I ask are there outside cafes where one can sit and watch the world go by? Look forward t your advice Regards Alex
