I'm a Canadian who has lived in different countries around the Middle East for a number of years. I'm married to a Lebanese man and have teenage children. We were in Lebanon previously for two years, and are back again for the second time since Sept 2010.

  • Thanks, Leah, I'm glad you got a laugh over the tomato price demonstration. And sorry for taking so ridiculously long to respond to your kind comment -- I've completely and utterly neglected the blog since before summer. I can totally relate to your paranoia when you heard the guy selling apples on the megaphone. I can't tell you how many times that happened to me when we first moved here. It's those crummy old megaphones they use and the sing-song way they chant, it just sounds like some call to arms or something. I'm glad to hear that you love Lebanon and hope that you will get to enjoy many more visits to this crazy old place : )

    • Im a Canadian (from BC originally, now in QC) who is married to a Lebanese man and I love Lebanon. Your blog is hilarious. My husband and I laughed out loud over your blog about the tomato demonstration. It reminds us of an evening we spent in the family village in 2008. It was my first time to Lebanon and I was brave considering a childhood with my eyes glued to news on TV about war in Lebanon. I felt very secure there until this night. We were sitting on the deck, enjoying some red wine and a truck started to circle the neighborhood with a man shouting in Arabic into a megaphone. My back straightened and I cried out "what is that man saying?!!". My husband's face looked serious as he strained to listen carefully.

"apples! Fresh apples for sale! Come get some apples"

      Apparently I'm maldooni.
