I've got a few things on the go that are pretty unique to my situation...so I couldn't recommend these same things to you. The best thing I can suggest for you is to take a solid month out of your life, and rent a short-term furnished apartment in the Croatian city where you think you want to live. Go in a non-tourist season like November-March to see what the place really feels like when the weather isn't so great. You'll also get a feel for the people and the culture. And then you can go around in person and find out about job opportunities or other types of income sources (like buying and then renting out an apartment here).
Best of luck with your plans!
