I recently moved to Zagreb, Croatia, from Albuquerque, New Mexico. I completed my MA in art history at the University of Texas at Austin in August, and now I'm helping develop English-language educational programs at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb. I write about moving to Croatia at http://hungrylittleelephant.blogspot.com.

  • Hi Leonard,

Yes, from what I can tell, there are many English language schools here that are often looking for teachers. Of course, most of them prefer some sort of teaching experience. If you're interested in working for a school, I would recommend doing a Google search and sending out a letter of interest to whichever schools look good to you.

It's very hard to generalize about these kinds of things. Could you and your girlfriend find work here? Possibly, yes. But it depends on many factors. I have my MA in art history as well, and currently I am not paid for my work at MSU. There are other benefits to this arrangement: experience, of course, networking, and it helped me get a visa. But, as I understand it, it's very difficult for foreigners to find legal work here. Your employer must apply for a visa on your behalf, and they must make a case for why they are hiring you.

If you're serious about coming here, my advice would be to start doing some searches for potential employers and just put yourself out there. Send inquiries. Write letters. You can also check out moj-posao.net for job listings.

    I hope that helps somewhat!

    Good luck!
