My husband said to me one day "do you want to work another 15 years before retiring or would you rather retire now and find a way to do it cheaply." I said "where are we going and when?" This led us to a year long journey of exploring some of the top retirement destinations in the world before choosing Panama. I always seemed to have a knack for writing but life got in the way and I never found the time to sit down and do it. One day my husband stumbled upon something I wrote and said "wow, you write well and need to start doing this again." I wrote well as a teenager and was steered into a journalism career only to discover that was not the type of writing that I enjoyed. Instead I enjoy writing straight from the heart about myself and other people that I encounter along the way. What makes people tick fascinates me as does places we go to meet them. And so began our blog of our pending move to Panama, the road blocks along the way and the hurdles we had to jump over to move our lives overseas. Relocating to another country is NOT for everyone and we are still in the infantile stages ourselves. We approaced this move with open minds, open hearts and open arms. We have been willing to embrace ALL that Panama has to offer, even though it's much different from that of the United States. Blogging has been rewarding and also a way to keep in touch with those we left behind back in the states. I expect my experiences to be compiled into other publications to offer to ex-pats that may wish to follow along our trail. We are two adventurous, crazy gringos making our way in a world so different from the one we left behind. Life is too short to sit around waiting for something to happen. By moving to Panama we were able to retire in our 50's, learn a new language, make new friends, have good cheap healthcare and live on much less money while having the time of our lives.

  • Loved your blog and yes, you are a good writer. My name is cindy, chprochnow651@aol.com. I live in Minnesota and my husband and I are in our 60's and looking into possibly living in Panama. We are not wanting wild and crazy citylife, looking for simplicity and the opportunity to mix with the people and cultureal richness of this country. Want more rural area for settling, but 1st want to explore areas. This is the very beginning of our inquiry. I would love to correspond with you if you care to.cindy

    • I teach online for several universities. My work is portable and I'd be interested in relacating in Panama. I'd like to visit to become more familiar and would like some guidance in planning such a trip. Can someone recommend someone to communicate with regarding such an excursion? I'd consider traveling during theDecember holiday season. Any guidance would be much appreciated.

      • My wife and I are looking for a good place to spent the winter. We are thinking of Panama, but I am a little concerned that there is not enough to keep us interested for two months in Panama City. Last year we went to Europe and followed the weather, wherever it was warm we went, we spent about four days in each location. The travel was easy, good trains cheap airfare. I am concerned about committing to a condo for two months and being stuck in one place that doesn't offer much. What is your impression of Panama City? What areas would you recommend for us to look for a condo? We are in our 50's and are more interested in walking and exploring than we are in night life.

        Thanks

        • Hi-My husband and I are feeling more certain everyday that Panama is the place for us! Sounds like a chance to retire in 1 1/2-2 years instead of 5-6. We'd like to make a "preliminary" trip in March 2013. We'd really like to find out everything we can durng the trip, who would you suggest we meet with? We'll likely stay in the Panama City area during our visit.
          Thanks so much!

            • Hello! My husband and I are just starting to truly entertain thoughts of relocating to Panama and need to come down for a few weeks to really get a lay of the land. I came across your blog in my research quest and would love to hear more from a real live person that has done the move and managing the early stages of living there. Any gems of knowedlge you could share with us would be terrific. Jim is 65 and a Plastics Engineer, I just turned 58 and a massage therapist. I still have my CA RE license and have worked in CA State Governmental Affairs for approx. 20 years before that in Legislative, Education and Telecommunications fields. My passion being in health in alternative/natural practices.
