Hello! I was wandering around the internet researching health insurance in the BVI and stumbled upon your blog. The funny thing is...I am also an american painter and am in the process of relocating to Tortola! Many of your blog entries address exactly the kinds of issues I've been wondering about, i.e. the logistics of being a foreigner & artist, bringing my furry friends, the heat, getting my hands on supplies, etc. So...thank you for sharing your experiences, and also for helping me to feel that i will not be the only one of my kind! I admire your courage! Being an artist anywhere in the world is a challenge, but to make it work for you living in a place like Tortola is truly commendable. There's no doubt in my mind that it isn't the easiest place to keep an art career thriving (I met one artist when I was there last fall who was in the midst of moving on, he seemed pretty disillusioned). I encourage you to stay the course in keeping your art #1. You’ll receive that which you need by radiating what you love...the beauty and colors of your life’s work. How do I know? Because this was the life-changing message gifted to me when I was on that amazing island last year. The only caveat...believe. Your work is beautiful and the world deserves (and desperately needs) it! I’m looking forward to reading more about your life in paradise. It’s my hope to be moving by the end of summer – at which time I would love to meet up and see your work in person. In the meantime, I would dearly appreciate any advice you can offer on relocating, and would love to return the favor in any way possible. I figure we artists have to stick together, and I know that networking is an important part of this. All the best, Michele mfraichard@gmail.com

Hi Michele, Wow, thank you so much for those encouraging words, and for checking out my blog. Yes, it is a challenge to work and live here (especially as an artist), as would be expected. The rewards can be great if one is willing to give up certain conveniences for tranquility and beautiful surroundings. It would be lovely to meet you once you've arrived and have gotten settled. Coincidentally, I have just recently made friends with another new artist on the island. She's now employed at a photography studio and just settling into island life. It's so important to have those contacts with other artists, particularly where there is little support for the fine arts. May I ask, do you have a website? What kind of painting do you do? If you want to contact me via email, it's info@stephanieclayton.com. Feel free to write me back here, or through my email. All my other contact info is on the website at www.stephanieclayton.com. I look forward to hearing back from you. Best regards, Stephanie
